Mole or Vole? What’s the difference

In Burlington and Oakville we get a lot of calls regarding rodents digging their lawn up. What they think is a mole can most likely be vole which are prevalent in our area.
While moles spend most of the time underground and are nearsighted and colourblind, feed mainly on worms and grubs…Voles spend time above and below ground. Active year round and damage lawns, plants fruit trees, and are from the rodent family.
Despite their differences both leave distinct evidence of their travel called runways.
These are much trickery to deal with, unlike mice and rats as they are mainly outdoors and difficult to track and eliminate. There are special rodent baits we can use as well as traps but generally a proper pest management program must be put in place.
